La Ventana

An hour southeast of La Paz, La Ventana is a small beach town that transforms each winter into a global kiteboarding and windsurfing hub. When the El Norte wind blows, the bay fills with kites; when it drops, there's diving, hot springs, whale sharks nearby and taco-stand sunsets.

From roughly November to March, the reliable El Norte wind makes La Ventana one of the world's premier kite spots, with schools, downwinders to El Sargento and a friendly international crowd. Off-wind days mean diving, SUP and island trips.

Know Before You Go
December to February for the most reliable wind. Off-season (Apr–Oct) suits divers and those seeking calm water.
Warm, dry and famously windy in winter. Summers are hot, humid and calm — better for diving than kiting.
About an hour by car southeast of La Paz (and its airport, LAP). A rental car is essential.
